Background

Due to constantly evolving network topologies, generation resources, and load requirements, thermal overloads can arise that require generation to be dispatched in a manner that does not result in the lowest cost delivery of energy. Redispatching generation to solve these overloads can be extremely inefficient from a cost production standpoint and can result in significantly higher costs for consumers.

The Problem

Before Smart Wires the utility anticipated spending an incremental $5.3 million per month to redispatch generation in order to prevent overloads on its 115 kV network.

The Solution

Smart Wires was able to provide the utility with a solution that minimizes the uneconomic dispatch and supplies more power with lower cost generation, resulting savings of $4.5 million per month and a project payback of less than four months.
