Smart Wires offers a revolutionary mobile deployment method for its well-established power flow control technology. Installed in less than one day, utilities leverage this tool to change line reactance for short-term or near-term needs such as extending or enabling outage windows to complete critical grid upgrades or overcoming challenges associated with new generation or load connections.
One of our mobile units is currently traveling from the USA to Greece’s Peloponnese region, where it will be deployed on the Greek Transmission System, as part of the Horizon 2020 Flexitranstore project.
After arriving by ship from the US, the mobile unit was showcased at a special stakeholder event in Dublin, Ireland, in March, before heading on to Brussels, Belgium, in early April, where members of the ENTSOE-E’s System Operations Committee also had the opportunity to learn more about, see and tour the unit.
After a short stop in Bulgaria, the unit arrived in Greece and will be installed in May. Here, the unit will allow previously constrained renewable generation to fully access the market. After one year in Greece, the unit will move to the Bulgarian transmission system in 2020, where it will also increase renewable connections.
SmartValve is gaining significant global attention and is heralding a new era in the energy industry.
Smart Wires provides the industry’s first easily redeployable, intelligent “valve” to efficiently route power along lines with excess capacity. SmartValves allows utilities to fully utilize the grid they have already built.
SmartValves can increase or decrease the reactance of a given circuit, resulting in power pushed off overloaded lines or pulled on to under-utilized circuits. SmartValves are also capable of providing dynamic services (e.g. power oscillation damping). These solutions enable utilities to better control their transmission networks, which means they can now integrate renewables more efficiently and at a lower cost to consumers.
