The Power Router™ leverages proven Guardian™ technology and builds upon the success of its predecessors. By using revolutionary power electronics, the Power Router effectively increases or decreases reactance of a given circuit, enabling real‐time power flow control. Designed to address a wider range of applications and network challenges than its Guardian analogue, the Power Router synthesizes a variable capacitance or inductance. By injecting a voltage waveform in quadrature to the line current, the Power Router emulates a series capacitor or series reactor without the negative characteristics of these passive devices, such as sub‐synchronous resonance (SSR) and constant VAR consumption.
These units are typically installed on dedicated transmission towers (Smart Towers™) or in banks (Smart Banks™) within or near the transmission right-of-way (see Deployment Options for more information). Like Guardian technology, the Power Router is designed for modular deployment, offering key advantages compared with many traditional approaches to infrastructure investments. Router technology is applied to all three phases, with the number of devices per phase determined by the amount of compensation required. Routers also leverage similar control schemes to those implemented for Guardians.
