A quarter-century ago, the world’s best engineers recognized that power electronics would revolutionize the grid. Scientists at Westinghouse’s Power Electronics group and the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) collaborated to introduce FACTSs (Flexible Alternating Current Transmission Systems) – a breakthrough for variable power flow control on electricity networks.
During the Northeast Blackout of 2003, with 55 million people across North America in the dark, a visionary team at Georgia Tech University sought to develop these ideas further. They soon established a smart power flow control concept, allowing grid operators to monitor and adjust power flows across their networks in real time.
This new technology marked a critical step forward in grid efficiency – and served as the catalyst for a new partnership among some of the US’s largest and most-respected utilities. These stakeholders saw that smart power flow control would allow far more flexibility on a rapidly-changing grid, and together, they launched Smart Wires.

SmartValve, combined with our advanced analytics and consulting services, allows our customers to accelerate the clean energy transition and move toward a digital grid.
Nearly two decades later, Smart Wires continues our relentless drive toward greater grid efficiency and a greener planet. Deep strategic partnerships with some of the world’s most respected utilities have allowed us to listen, learn and understand their urgent needs: integrating more renewables, increasing flexibility and stability, reducing costs and environmental and community impact, and preparing for an unpredictable future.
To meet these needs, we created SmartValve, a technology that revolutionizes the power flow control landscape with a transformerless device that delivers orders of magnitude more impact at a fraction of the cost compared with our first-generation power flow products.
SmartValve, combined with our advanced analytics and consulting services, allows our customers to reduce congestion, boost reliability, save consumers hundreds of millions of dollars, accelerate the clean energy transition and move toward a digital grid.
