Supporting generation growth in northern Colombia

The Atlántico region is expected to see major growth in wind and solar generation, creating new pressure on the transmission network.

With 1.5 GW of wind and solar generation already approved for connection, the Atlántico region in northern Colombia is set to experience substantial energy growth over the coming years.

This was forecast to cause overloads on multiple transmission circuits in the area, especially in N-1 or contingency scenarios as more generation is connected.

After evaluating multiple network options, the national planning agency, UPME, selected ISA TRANSELCA’s proposal to use SmartValve as the optimal solution. The project involved installing 21 SmartValves across five 220 kV circuits in 2024, unlocking over 300 MW of firm capacity.

Selected as the optimal solution

UPME selected ISA TRANSELCA’s SmartValve proposal after evaluating multiple network options to address expected overloads.

Strengthens system flexibility

The project enhances the network’s ability to accommodate new generation while maintaining reliable power flow.

Built to address forecast congestion

The Atlántico project helps manage expected overloads across critical transmission circuits as new generation connects to the system.

More firm capacity to support reliable power flow

The Atlántico project shows how advanced power flow control can help transmission owners respond to congestion and support new generation using existing infrastructure.

Unlocks over 300 MW of firm capacity

Increases usable capacity across constrained 220 kV transmission circuits.

Strengthens reliability of energy supply

Helps manage overload risks during contingency scenarios as new generation connects.

Provides benefits faster than alternatives

Offers a targeted solution compared with larger or more time-intensive network options.

Optimizes the use of substation space

Uses a compact, scalable deployment approach across existing grid infrastructure.
