Litgrid is using SUMO Dynamic Line Rating software to increase transmission capacity, improve grid visibility, and support the integration of more wind energy on Lithuania’s existing grid.
Litgrid, the transmission system operator of Lithuania, needed a smarter way to support wind energy integration while making better use of existing transmission infrastructure.
Litgrid was looking for a solution to support the seamless integration of wind energy across its grid. This required a more resilient power grid where capacity on the existing network could be better utilized alongside new power lines planned for construction.
To fully utilize existing capacity, Litgrid deployed SUMO on the Palanga – Vėjas overhead line, which includes 36 towers and is located in the windy north-west part of the Lithuanian coastline.
SUMO provides system-wide visibility of conductors, transformers, and other network components using both mezzo-scale and micro-scale weather data.
With SUMO, Litgrid can increase grid capacity without adding new infrastructure, supporting the integration of more renewable energy while improving visibility into real-time network capability.
SUMO uses weather data and real-time network conditions to identify when existing lines can safely carry more power.
The software supports visibility across conductors, transformers, and other critical network components.
The Palanga – Vėjas project shows how Dynamic Line Rating can help transmission operators increase usable grid capacity while supporting resilience, safety, and long-term asset planning.
Helps Litgrid make better use of the existing Palanga – Vėjas overhead line.
Provides more accurate operating visibility based on real-time environmental conditions.
Increases usable capacity without requiring additional transmission infrastructure.
Supports asset utilization and planning decisions with more accurate ratings.
