Implementation and Performance of Innovative Grid Technologies to Increase Grid Utilisation and Accelerate Smart Distribution Network Development
As power systems face rising demand, growing connection queues, and the need to integrate more renewable generation, it is increasingly important to make better use of existing grid infrastructure before relying only on conventional reinforcements. This paper presents practical methodologies for assessing the combined use of Innovative Grid Technologies, including Advanced Power Flow Control (APFC), Dynamic Line Rating (DLR), advanced conductors, and voltage regulators.
The study shows that these technologies can deliver greater value when planned together, rather than evaluated in isolation. In one real-world generation connection example, the existing network could connect 350 MW, while the combination of APFC and DLR enabled the full 650 MW queue to connect. In another case, a phased strategy combining DLR, APFC, advanced conductors, and later conventional reinforcement showed the potential to significantly increase line transfer capacity over the planning horizon.
These results reinforce the value of a coordinated grid planning approach, where technologies such as SmartValve™ and SUMO can work alongside other solutions to relieve constraints, accelerate connections, improve utilisation of existing assets, and defer or complement traditional infrastructure investments.
